I Got a Toy Poodle Puppy

Meet Pippi! I finally got a toy poodle. 🐶🐾

Honestly, this feels a little unreal to write because this has been one of those “one day” dreams for years. I’ve loved these tiny curly dogs forever. I remember seeing toy poodles all the time when I lived in the States almost 10 years ago and being completely obsessed with them already back then. Every single time I saw one, I was like: yep. That’s the dog.

But I kept telling myself the same thing over and over:
not yet.
timing isn’t perfect.
later.
one day it’ll happen naturally.

And somehow it actually did.

The funniest part is that I already had the name Pippi ready long before I even had the dog. Inspired by Pippi Longstocking obviously, the chaotic little adventurer with her own rules, big personality and tiny fearless energy. Then I found out this puppy had little white spots on her back paws that literally look like stockings. At that point I was like… alright. That’s too specific to be a coincidence.

So this is Pippi. 🐻 And yes, I am fully obsessed with her.

What is it actually like getting a puppy?

I’m not going to lie, I mentally prepared for complete life destruction. Everyone talks about puppies like you’re adopting a caffeinated raccoon with emotional issues.

But honestly? It has been way easier and calmer than I expected.

Of course your routine changes. You can’t just disappear for 12 hours and live like a random NPC anymore. There’s structure now. Morning potty trips. Feeding schedule. Tiny paws following you into the bathroom. But weirdly enough, I adapted to it almost immediately.

And I truly lucked out with Pippi.

The very first pic I saw of her from the breeder.

Toy poodles are SCARY smart!

People kept telling me toy poodles are intelligent, but I didn’t fully understand it until I got one.

Pippi has been pottying outside literally from day one. In 6 weeks she’s only had two accidents inside, and honestly both were my fault because I didn’t take her out right after eating.

It genuinely feels like she understands that the apartment is not the place for pottying. Which sounds ridiculous because she was only around 3.5 months old when I got her. Every day she surprises me with how quickly she learns things.

She also sleeps in a different room than me in her own bed and has NEVER cried at night. Not once. When I go to my bedroom, she just casually walks to her own little bed like she pays rent here.

Then every morning she gets insanely excited when she sees me again. Tail wagging, stretching, yawning dramatically like she just finished a 14-hour corporate shift. We immediately go outside, then breakfast. She already knows the routine perfectly.

Tiny dog, huge personality.

One thing nobody tells you about toy poodles is how funny they are. Pippi genuinely makes me laugh every day. She’s tiny. Like… tiny tiny. Some people probably wouldn’t even classify her as a real dog until she starts running around at full speed like a little athlete.

I take her almost everywhere with me already and she’s been amazing. She slept through my nail appointment on my lap. She also came with me to therapy and behaved better than some adults honestly.

And the best part? She loves being close. If you want a clingy little best friend, a lap dog, a cuddle bug that follows you everywhere like your emotionally attached assistant, get a toy poodle.

What I’m feeding her?

I’ve been feeding her a British dried turkey food that was recommended to me at a local pet store, plus I mix in wet food every day because… I don’t know, personally I also wouldn’t want to eat dry cereal every hour of my life.

I’ve been trying different wet foods, adding boiled turkey or chicken sometimes, and slowly introducing safe fruits and vegetables too. I’m learning as I go, but overall I just want her food to feel balanced and enjoyable, not robotic.

Life lately...

Life definitely changes with a puppy, but in a surprisingly grounding way. My days have more structure now. More walks. More fresh air. More tiny pauses during the day. Less doomscrolling, more watching a small curly creature try to fight a leaf in the park.

And honestly? I love her so much already it’s ridiculous.
